They start with us. Us and that little idea in the back of our heads.
Where were you when you got that great idea for a book? Were you driving? At work? Watching your favorite TV show and thinking, “Wouldn’t it be cool if...” Maybe you were talking with a friend over coffee. Or maybe you were mid-shower with no way to write down your idea. Every idea starts like a little ember. It might explode into a full spark of inspiration and warm us from head to foot, pushing us to create something right away. Or, if we don’t have the time to tend to it, it might simmer down to a slow burn. But a good story is always there, flickering beneath the pile of responsibility, day-to-day life, and self-consciousness that stops us from exploring it.
How do I know? Because I’m a writer too, and since I was a kid, I’ve always found myself going back to a single story I wanted to tell. Despite my great idea, I struggled to write. School got in the way and then a busy work schedule and then my own “Can I really do this?” attitude. Until one day, I was really ready to write. I had a scene in my head that just wouldn't go away. That morning, on my two-hour-long train commute, I wrote that scene in my journal. The next day, I wrote a conversation between my two characters. The day after that, I wrote a little more. That started at year-long writing challenge that got me to an 800-page first draft of my book.
Where have you taken your little flickering idea? Inspiration will strike you anywhere, at any time, and when you least expect it, but when do you know you’ve got a story you’re ready to write? When it won’t leave. When it stays with you in your downtime, invades your home and your thoughts, and prompts you to scribble down your ideas anywhere and everywhere. When you keep stumbling on messages like this, telling you it’s time. That’s when it’s time to write your book.
